Gastric sleeve surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about two hours to complete. Just a few small incisions are made in the stomach area so that a laparoscope and other surgical instruments used to perform a gastrectomy can be inserted in the abdomen. Then approximately 80 percent of the stomach is removed and the rest of the pouch is sealed using medical staples. In order to prevent any leakage after a patient starts consuming food, the staples are then manually stitched over and a fluid test is done while the patient is still on the operating table. The new stomach acquires a shape somewhat similar to a sleeve. The stomach retains all of its previous functions, therefore, food can still be digested properly. The biggest change is a significantly decreased feeling of hunger. Moreover, the patient feels full faster and can eat smaller portions of food.

You typically qualify for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI higher than 35. A BMI of 30 to 35 is considered sufficient for undergoing gastric sleeve surgery if a patient is present with type 2 diabetes or arterial hypertension.

You can have your surgery done for free by claiming a refund from your local health board. We are helping patients with the documentation needed in order to claim a refund after following the EU directive route for medical treatment abroad. Most of the patients can travel back 6 days after the surgery.

For your flight back it is advisable to get special assistance to help to get in/out of the plane. The service is freely provided by the airports/airlines.

Patients after gastric bypass and sleeve surgery need about a 2-3 week recovery period, (although some can take as long as 6 weeks) before they can return to work.

We advise that you should not drive a motor vehicle for 2-3 days after your gastric sleeve operation. This is to allow the effects of the anesthetics and any post-operative analgesia (painkillers) to wear off.

In order to get the most out of your weight loss surgery, it’s going to take a lot of hard work on your part post-surgery. That includes working out on a regular basis. Depending on your health and how your body is healing, your doctor may allow you to engage in light exercising in the first two weeks after surgery.

During the first month, patients can expect an average weight loss of up to 30lbs/13kg. After three months, the percentage of overall excess loss can reach up to 30 percent. That number increases to 50 percent after six months – which means the expected weight loss translates to about 0,8kg per week.

Complications after gastric sleeve are rare, yet they may occur (as is with any other surgical procedure). The complications include:

• Blood clots.
• Gallstones (risk increases with rapid or. substantial weight loss)
• Hernia.
• Internal bleeding or profuse bleeding of the. surgical wound.
• Leakage.
• Perforation of stomach or intestines.
• Skin separation.
• Stricture.

You will be guided through all the possible complications during your consultation(s) with the surgeon.

In case you are feeling unwell or there is anything abnormal:

While you are still in Lithuania: you will be immediately checked upon by the medical personnel. Should there be a need for a follow-up procedure, it would be carried out for you free of charge.

The complication in the later stages of the recovery is even rarer and most of the time, not an emergency. If they happen, our surgeon would consult you online and explain the steps to take.
